N-Back
N-Back
A square will appear in different cells of a 3Γ3 grid. Press MATCH when the current position is the same as the one shown N steps ago. Choose your difficulty:
How to Play
Each round has 20 trials. A blue square briefly appears in one cell of the 3Γ3 grid every couple of seconds. Your job: press MATCH when the current position is identical to the one shown exactly N steps before. Choose 1-Back, 2-Back, or 3-Back depending on how hard you want to push your working memory. After the round, your accuracy is shown. The N-Back has been studied since 2008 as a way to train working memory and fluid intelligence.
Controls
Watch each square flash in the grid. Press MATCH if it is a match β do nothing if it is not. The first N trials are warm-up: the button is disabled because there is nothing to compare to yet. A green progress dot means a correct response; a red dot means a mistake.
Tips & Strategy
Do not try to memorize all positions β just hold the last N in mind and update them like a sliding window. Sub-vocalize: 'top-left, center, bottom-rightβ¦'. Start with 1-Back to find the rhythm. Most people plateau at 2-Back; pushing to 3-Back is a serious workout. Train daily for ten minutes β research suggests sustained practice produces the strongest gains.
